Homemade Tzatziki Sauce recipe

Tzatziki sauce is a traditional yogurt-based sauce served with Greek and Mediterranean dishes. The creamy, tangy yogurt is mixed with crisp, cool cucumber for a wonderfully versatile sauce that can be spread on crackers or served alongside an entree such as fish or chicken kebabs. Make ahead and chill overnight before serving at your next dinner party.

  • 2 c. plain greek-style yogurt (do not use low-fat or reduced fat yogurt)
  • 2 tsp fresh garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 cucumbers, peeled and seeded
  • tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • c. fresh mint leaves, for garnish

  1. Line a strainer with cheesecloth and place over a bowl. Drain yogurt for 1 hour to remove some of its water. Remove from cheesecloth and set aside. Discard cheesecloth,

  2. In large bowl combine yogurt, garlic and salt. Set aside.

  3. Add cucumber to yogurt. Stir in pepper, and mix well. Transfer to airtight container and refrigerate 1 hour or until chilled.

  4. Drizzle with olive oil and garnish with mint. Serve as desired.
